Cryolite glass prosthesis makes a reflection like a natural eye and imitates the looks of a real eye better than a plastic prosthesis. If one is looking in a mirror from 1 m distance and both eyes look similar it is a characteristic of a good quality eye prosthetics.
It takes 1 day to make a cryolit glass ocular prosthesis. Prosthesis is made when the patient is present only, and it is individually adapted to the eye cavity and the color of the healthy eye. The shape of an ocular prosthesis resembles a half of a wallnut shell, on which the iris and pupil of the eye, as well as the pattern of blood-vessels on the white area of the eye-ball (sclera) are reproduced. Ocular prosthesis made of this material must be replaced once in every two years.
Two types of glass ocular prosthesis can be distinguished, i.e., single-wall and double-wall prosthesis. Prosthetics specialist will indicate the type of prosthesis, which is necessary for the specific patient according to the individual traits and specific characteristics of the patient.
Single-wall glass prosthesis is selected, when the patient has a remaining eye membrane or atrophic eyeball, as well as when the entire eyeball has been maintained and the frontal central part has gross opacity and the eye is blind. In such case the prosthesis masks the opacity and it is put like a lens on the maintained eyeball. Single-wall eye prosthesis is used also when after an eye removal operation an implant is set in patient’s eye cavity for preventing facial defects and ensuring synchronous movements of the prosthesis and the healthy eye. Making a single-wall glass prosthesis is complicated; it requires much more attention and professionalism than making a double-wall glass prosthesis.
Double-wall glass prosthesis has comparatively thin walls (0.3 – 0.5 mm on average), between which a comparatively extensive closed vacuum area is located. This particular prosthesis is used after an eyeball removal surgery (enucleation).
